This Harmonic Society of Newark was the first choral society in Newark and the second in the country to be formed. A group of people met at the Newark Academy on April 23, 1830 and agreed to establish the Society, naming Albert Holbrook its first chair. American Anti-Slavery Society, also known as the AASS (established 1833–disestablished 1870) was an abolitionist society founded by William Lloyd Garrison, and Arthur Tappan. Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave, was a key leader of this society who often spoke at its meetings. William Wells Brown was also a freed slave who often spoke at meetings.
